’Synthetic biology applied to the biomanufacturing of plant natural products of pharmaceutical interest’’, co-financed by Indena S.p.A. and PNRR (ex D.M. n. 630/2024)

Francesco Bellusci holds a Bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology (2021) from the University of Ferrara and a Master’s degree in Industrial Biotechnology (2023) from the University of Padova. During his academic, he developed a strong interest in synthetic biology and metabolic engineering for the production of industrially relevant molecules.

As part of his Master’s program, he completed an internship in biocatalysis field, culminating in a thesis on engineering Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 strains for the biosynthesis of the indigo dye. Seeking international research experience, he moved to Paris for a six-month internship at Sorbonne University, where he applied synthetic biology approaches to directed evolution in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii.

Since November 2024, Francesco has been pursuing a PhD in Converging Technologies for Biomolecular Systems. His research focuses on employing innovative synthetic biology tools to engineer Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains for the production of plant natural products with pharmaceutical applications.
