Gaia holds a Bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology from the University of Milan (Statale) and a Master’s degree in Industrial Biotechnology from the University of Milano-Bicocca. She is currently working as a post-graduate intern, continuing the research project developed during her Master’s thesis.

Her thesis titled “Metabolic engineering and in silico modelling for ethylene glycol assimilation as a carbon source in Saccharomyces cerevisiae” focused on an environmental research project aimed at exploring the assimilation of ethylene glycol (EG), a PET monomer, by Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and on improving this metabolic process so that EG could be exploited as an alternative carbon source .
The ultimate goal of the project is to contribute to the development of an industrial PET upcycling process, addressing the growing issue of plastic waste through sustainable biotechnological solutions.

Following the completion of her degree, Gaia has had the opportunity to further develop and expand this research, working on the subsequent experimental steps and strengthening her interest in environmental biotechnology and sustainable bioprocesses.
