the white biotech company
Galatea Bio Tech srl is a young innovative SME born in 2013 as a spin-off of the University Milano-Bicocca. The main founding shareholders of the company are Paola Branduardi, Danilo Porro and Adele Sassella, full professors in Industrial Biotechnology and Physics of the Matter.
The core business of Galatea Bio Tech is the development of bioprocesses for the production of bulk, speciality, and consumer chemicals by bioconversion or fermentation. Galatea Bio Tech aims at finding biotechnological solutions to support the transition from linear to circular economy, meeting the demand for sustainable processes and sustainable products.
Galatea Bio Tech also provides highly professional advice and assistance, as well as prototypes and proof of concept for the development of fermentative bioprocesses and sustainable products. Their clients are mainly companies interested in redirecting their productions towards a more sustainable model.
The R&D activities of Galatea Bio Tech are now mainly focused on the production of PLA (polylactic acid), a bio-based plastic made of lactic acid which is biodegradable and compostable (under industrial conditions).
• Galatea Bio Tech developed an innovative strategy for PLA production based on a one-step, fully biotechnological process from a recombinant yeast. This innovative process gained a European and Italian patent, and it is now under optimization for industrial use.
• A second business line of Galatea Bio Tech is related to the development of new bioplastics, mostly PLA-based, blended with bio-based and eco-friendly compounds.
