Project: MUSA

Multilayered Urban Sustainability Action

MUSA – Multilayered Urban Sustainability Action

Why

  • The management and possible valorization of agro-food waste is a major issue in the pursuit of a zero-waste economy.
  • Some urban waste biomasses is utilised as animal feed and compost but the most common disposal methods are landfilling and incineration.
  • Upcycling is emerging as a promising approach to reduce agro-food waste, while creating value from discarded resources.
  • There is a lack of demonstrated and replicable systemic solutions for the territorial deployment of the circular economy.

What

MUSA ecosystem is an innovation ecosystem born from the cooperation between University of Milano-Bicocca, University of Milano, Polytechnic University of Milan and Bocconi University.
Within MUSA ecosystem, Spoke 1 is creating an integrated platform focused on the urban regeneration.
The pillar of these activities is the integration of people well-being and biodiversity safeguards with novel productive and urban paradigms.
Within Spoke 1, the IndBioTech lab is part of the ENI-Joint lab, developing industrial processes able to valorise urban waste biomasses through the paradigm of circular bio-economy and integrated biorefinery.
These actions will implement novel models of urban regeneration capable to reduce the disposed urban wastes.

How

Our task is to give back value to waste biomass (i.e. green kiwi peel) taking advantage of enzymatic and microbial biodiversity and further potentiating it by metabolic engineering approaches.
